(in Repentance and Repentance+)

Abyss is an unlockable activated item added in The Binding of Isaac: Repentance.

Effects

  • On use, destroys all items on item pedestals in the room and gives a unique red locust familiar for each item destroyed.
  • These locusts are permanent once created, up to a maximum of 64, after which creating more will replace older locusts.
  • The locusts loosely orbit Isaac similarly to regular Blue Flies, charging in the direction Isaac is firing until hitting an enemy, wall, or certain obstacles like key blocks.
  • (except in Repentance+) Locusts deal Isaac's damage unless they are a special locust (2-3 times per hit).
  • (in Repentance+) The damage locusts deal is a multiplier of Isaac's damage and dependent on the quality of the item destroyed (2-3 times per hit):
    • Quality 0: 0.5x damage.
    • Quality 1: 0.75x damage.
    • Quality 2: 1x damage.
    • Quality 3: 1.5x damage.
    • Quality 4: 2x damage.
  • The locusts may gain additional effects depending on the item destroyed.[1]

Notes

  • Character Tainted Apollyon icon.pngTainted Apollyon starts with this item in the consumable slot.
  • (in Repentance+) Effects from some special locusts have the following consistent properties:
    • Explosions are smaller and deal 20 damage.
    • Electricity deals 25% of Isaac's damage per tick. It also does not deal damage to the enemy hit, but arcs to other nearby enemies, similar to 120 Volt120 Volt
    • Crack the SkyCrack the Sky beams deal 3x the locust's damage per tick.
    • Small poison farts deal 5 damage and poison all enemies caught in it.
    • Regular large farts don’t deal damage, but push away other nearby enemies.
    • All creep function identically to that from Mysterious LiquidMysterious Liquid regardless of color.
    • Locusts which destroy enemy projectiles will still trigger their effect and block shots while orbiting around Isaac.
    • The NecronomiconThe Necronomicon effect deals 40 damage. This can be affected by the damage increase from A Missing PageA Missing Page or Missing Page 2Missing Page 2.
    • The BrimstoneBrimstone vortex and subsequent laser each deal 75% of Isaac's damage per tick.
    • The Maw Of The VoidMaw Of The Void effect deals Isaac's damage per tick.
    • Locusts that destroy rocks can also open regular doors as well as Secret RoomSecret Room entrances.
  • Using Abyss in the ShopShop or the Devil RoomDevil Room will not affect any items that have not been purchased.
  • In rooms where there are multiple items to choose from, using Abyss will give only one locust for each item choice/set.
  • If already at the maximum amount of locusts and presented with multiple non-choice item pedestals, using Abyss will only consume half of the pedestals.
  • If Abyss is used while Isaac is holding an item above his head, it can still consume the item and grant a locust.
    • This mechanic can be used to destroy bought items, unwanted blind items as well as familiars given by Soul of LilithSoul of Lilith.
  • Using Abyss to destroy items in Boss RushBoss Rush or Challenge RoomChallenge Room counts as taking an item and causes waves of bosses or enemies to start spawning.
  • Locusts granted by Abyss are not taken away during the sequence to obtain the Knife Piece 2Knife Piece 2. Mother's Shadow.pngMother's Shadow cannot be harmed, but they can help destroy Fire Place.pngFire Places blocking the path faster.
  • Locusts granted by Abyss are nearly irremovable, only GenesisGenesis can completely remove all locusts from a character. Sacrificial AltarSacrificial Altar and exceeding the familiar limit can remove some locusts. Reroll effects such as D4D4, Character Tainted Eden icon.pngTainted Eden taking damage, Missing No.Missing No., etc. cannot remove locusts.
  • (in Repentance+) Locusts that have a chance to explode can extinguish Blue Fire Place.pngBlue Fire Places.
  • In Repentance Co-Op if a player dies, any of the special locusts they have will persist, following and attacking from their ghost.

Synergies

  • BFFS!BFFS! / Hive MindHive Mind: Increases the locusts' size and damage by 25%.
    • These two items don't stack.
  • Book of VirtuesBook of Virtues: Spawns wisps in the middle ring in the form of black-glowing flies with extra HP that do not fire tears.
  • Extension CordExtension Cord: Electricity will flow between Isaac and the locusts.
  • GuppyGuppy : Damage dealt by locusts can spawn blue flies.
  • IpecacIpecac: Locusts gain a flat +2 damage.
  • Character Tainted Eden icon.pngTainted Eden: Abyss can be rerolled, but the locusts are permanent.

Interactions

  • Baby-BenderBaby-Bender / Box of FriendsBox of Friends: Does not affect locusts.
  • Car BatteryCar Battery: No effect.
  • Death CertificateDeath Certificate: Only allows the consumption of one item per Death Certificate room and the consumed item is treated as if it was picked up causing all other items in the room to disappear and forcing Isaac to leave the area.
  • GenesisGenesis: The locusts created by Abyss are removed without creating items to replace them.
  • Sacrificial AltarSacrificial Altar: Locusts can be sacrificed for items.
  • VoidVoid: If Void consumes Abyss, the latter will take priority and using Void to consume another item pedestal will generate a locust. Even consuming active items will generate a locust, and Void will not copy that active item's effect. This essentially causes Void to act identically to Abyss, (except in Repentance+) albeit requiring 2 more charges per use. Stats and effects of the active items absorbed prior to consuming Abyss are kept and will trigger everytime Void will be used.

In-game Footage

Trivia

  • The way that Abyss works is similar to how it's described in the Book of Revelation, where locusts emerge from the Abyss and are controlled by Apollyon.
  • The swirl in VoidVoid's appearance is in the opposite direction of Abyss's.

Bugs

Bug Bug! (except in Repentance+) According to locusts.xml, IpecacIpecac locusts are supposed to explode. This never happens in game; Ipecac only gives a locust that deals slightly more damage and poisons enemies.
Bug Bug! Each use of Glowing HourglassGlowing Hourglass that does not move Isaac to a different room than the one he is currently in (such as the starting room of a new floor) will duplicate the locusts.
Bug Bug! (in Repentance+) Shard of GlassShard of Glass, BackstabberBackstabber, Mom's RazorMom's Razor, as well as AbyssAbyss' bleed locust appear to have been not updated properly for v1.9.7.9 and do not have the correct color or effect to match with Charm of the VampireCharm of the Vampire.
Bug Bug! (in Repentance+) Mega MushMega Mush's damage is inconsistent, sometimes not applying any damage multiplier. It also does not apply the rock-breaking effect which it should have.
Bug Bug! (in Repentance+) Punching BagPunching Bag's projectile destroying ability is also not functional.
Bug Bug! (in Repentance+) The Maw Of The VoidMaw Of The Void's effect appears to be dealing too much damage: dealing up to 100 damage per single activation on base damage.
Bug Bug! (in Repentance+) Hallowed GroundHallowed Ground seems like it is meant to have the homing effect, though it currently does not home.
Bug Bug! (in Repentance+) Blood BombsBlood Bombs is likely meant to spawn red instead of yellow creep, like with AnemicAnemic.

  1. Unique locusts and the items that give them are defined in locusts.xml. Every passive item in the game is listed in the file, but only the items mentioned actually have their locusts implemented.
