'M is an unlockable trinket added in The Binding of Isaac: Repentance.

Effects

Notes

  • The item given by ‘M will always have no charges, regardless of what the previous active item was and whether or not it was overcharged.
  • Rerolling into items counting towards transformations (e.g.Collectible Guppy's Paw icon.pngGuppy's Paw, Collectible Jar of Flies icon.pngJar of Flies, Collectible Bob's Rotten Head icon.pngBob's Rotten Head, Collectible The Bible icon.pngThe Bible etc.) will not be counted towards said transformation, regardless if Isaac puts it back down and picks it back up.
    • Having the Guppy transformation and rerolling either Collectible Guppy's Head icon.pngGuppy's Head orCollectible Guppy's Paw icon.pngGuppy's Paw will remove the transformation, even if these items were acquired before using ‘M.
  • Items that have costs associated with using them (such as Collectible Magic Fingers icon.pngMagic Fingers, Collectible Potato Peeler icon.pngPotato Peeler, Collectible Converter icon.pngConverter, etc.) can be rerolled even if Isaac doesn’t have the resources necessary to use them.
    • The only exception is Collectible Golden Razor icon.pngGolden Razor: Isaac must have the 5 cents necessary to use it in order for it to be rerolled.
  • The item’s charge must be expended for it to be rerolled; items that can be used without spending their charge immediately (such as Collectible Bob's Rotten Head icon.pngBob's Rotten Head, Collectible Black Hole icon.pngBlack Hole, Collectible Eraser icon.pngEraser, Collectible Spin to Win icon.pngSpin to Win, Collectible Mom's Bracelet icon.pngMom's Bracelet, etc.) must be properly used to have their charge expended.
  • ‘M cannot reroll items into Collectible Broken Shovel 1 icon.pngBroken Shovel, Collectible Mom's Shovel icon.pngMom's Shovel, Collectible Hold icon.pngHold or Collectible Recall icon.pngRecall.
  • The items generated are fixed per seed. This means the same active item on the same seed while holding 'M will always reroll into the same other active item every time.
  • The items rerolled into will not be removed from their item pools unless Isaac puts them down and picks them up again.
  • Items can be generated multiple times, even after they have been removed from their pools.

Strategy

  • Once ‘M gives a good active item, it can be dropped so that it can be continually used without it getting rerolled.
    • For this reason, it is recommended to drop 'M when taking unknown pills, in case Gulp! appears, which would prevent Isaac from keeping any active item.
  • Some active items have effects that can be harmful to Isaac when used; consider if rerolling the active item is worth the risk of getting an item that can’t be rerolled (either at all or without hurting the run).
    • Collectible Alabaster Box icon.pngAlabaster Box is especially noteworthy, as it cannot be rerolled, and will also prevent Isaac from gaining Soul Heart.pngSoul Hearts until he uses or gets rid of it.

Interactions

  • One-time use items: The item disappears before it can be rerolled.
    • Collectible Sacrificial Altar icon.pngSacrificial Altar: If Isaac has no eligible familiars, the altar can be rerolled without being consumed.
  • Collectible Book of Virtues icon.pngBook of Virtues: If an active item is combined with the Book, only the active item is rerolled; the Book remains unchanged. If no active item is combined with the Book, the Book will be rerolled on use. ‘M also cannot give Book of Virtues, as it is considered a passive item.
  • Collectible Breath of Life icon.pngBreath of Life: Breath of Life is rerolled once the charge is fully expended. After one second, Isaac starts getting hurt as if he was still using Breath of Life until he leaves the room.
  • Collectible Broken Glass Cannon icon.pngBroken Glass Cannon: The item is rerolled instead of turning into Glass Cannon. This item can also be given by ‘M directly.
    • This only applies if you manage to obtain a charged and usable Broken Glass Cannon, as it otherwise automatically replaces itself with Glass Cannon once charged.
  • Butter!Butter!: The active item is rerolled before being dropped.
  • Collectible Car Battery icon.pngCar Battery: The current active item is used twice before it is rerolled.
  • Collectible Esau Jr. icon.pngEsau Jr.: Isaac will transform into Esau Jr. if ‘M rerolls Isaac’s active item into Esau Jr. However, he will not transform into Esau Jr. if the item itself is used.
    • As the original character will be holding ‘M, Esau Jr. must be used twice for it to be rerolled.
  • Collectible Friendly Ball icon.pngFriendly Ball / Collectible Moving Box icon.pngMoving Box: As the item must be used twice to have its intended effect, rerolling it on the first use will prevent it from being used to its full effect.
  • Collectible Glowing Hourglass icon.pngGlowing Hourglass: Glowing Hourglass rewinds time before the reroll goes through, preventing it from happening. This is avoided when used during the Beast fight and will be rerolled into another active.
    • If Glowing Hourglass rerolls into a rechargeable item(e.g. Collectible Spin to Win icon.pngSpin to Win, Collectible The Boomerang icon.pngThe Boomerang), The Glass will have all its charges restored, allowing for infinite rewinding.
  • Collectible Magic Skin icon.pngMagic Skin: Items given by Magic Skin cannot be Magic Skin even if it’s rerolled on use. However, as Isaac will not be holding Magic Skin after using it, it will be able to replace future items after being rerolled.
  • Collectible Notched Axe icon.pngNotched Axe: The item will be rerolled once it runs out of durability.
  • Collectible Schoolbag icon.pngSchoolbag: Only the primary item is rerolled.

Trivia

  • 'M is from the Antibirth mod.
  • Like Collectible Missing No. icon.pngMissing No., the name 'M is a reference to a glitch from the Generation I Pokémon games, often thought of as a counterpart to MissingNo. itself. This is also referenced by its appearance, as random jumbles of pixels is very similar to the corrupted sprites you would see from a sprite error in Generation I Pokémon games.
  • The description is a combination of Broken RemoteBroken Remote and Collectible The D6 icon.pngThe D6's description, "It's broken" and "Reroll your destiny". This may be because it triggers when an active item is used (like Broken Remote) and it rerolls the active item (like D6).
