Eden is a character unlocked by completing WombWomb for the first time. Uniquely, they are only playable by spending Eden Tokens, which are awarded every time Boss Mom's Heart ingame.pngMom's Heart, Boss It Lives! ingame.pngIt Lives!, (except in Rebirth) Boss Ultra Greed ingame.pngUltra Greed, or (in Repentance and Repentance+) Boss The Beast ingame.pngThe Beast is defeated.

Each time a game is started as Eden, one token is spent and a new Eden is randomly generated based on the seed: They will have a random hairstyle, base stats, active item, passive item, and either a trinket, pill, or card/rune.

Eden's stats are centered around Issac's and are randomized within a set range. They will spawn with a combination of Red Heart containers and Soul Heart.pngSoul Hearts.

For details regarding the exact generation of an Eden Run, see Eden Generation.

Notes

  • (in Rebirth and Afterbirth) Holding R to reset doesn't work with Eden, and every time you start a new run, you use up one Eden token.
    • After starting a run and transforming into another character (using items like AnkhAnkh or (except in Rebirth and Afterbirth) ClickerClicker), holding R to reset will work and start a new run as Eden, even if you don't have tokens.
    • (except in Rebirth and Afterbirth) Holding R to reset will consume an Eden Token and start a new run.
  • (except in Repentance and Repentance+) Eden can start with most items, including The NegativeThe Negative or The PolaroidThe Polaroid if unlocked.
  • Eden Tokens are not awarded for killing Mom's Heart or It Lives in (except in Rebirth and Afterbirth) The VoidThe Void.
  • It is possible to achieve an ending as Eden while not getting another token if the player defeats Mom and earns a Void Portal, then defeats Delirium. This will count as a victory, but no Eden Token will be earned. This can also be achieved by using Sacrifice Rooms to teleport to the Dark Room.

Item Interactions

  • (in Repentance and Repentance+) BirthrightBirthright: Spawns 3 random items from random item pools. Only one can be taken.
  • (in Repentance and Repentance+) GenesisGenesis: If Eden uses Genesis it will reroll the character as if it was a new run (new starting items, new hairstyle and new stats).
  • (except in Repentance and Repentance+) Glowing HourglassGlowing Hourglass: If Eden starts with this item and immediately uses it in the starting room, the room will be reset, and all starting items and trinkets removed.
    • (in Repentance and Repentance+) Instead of the starting room being reset, Eden is taken to the starting room of HomeHome. If used again in this room without having entered any other rooms, the room will be reset, and all starting items and trinkets removed except Glowing Hourglass.

Trivia

  • In the book of Genesis, the Garden of Eden was the place where Adam and Eve lived before consuming the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, and thus being cast out by God.
  • According to Edmund, Eden is non-binary. A quote from Edmund says “Eden is the fabled “mystery man” I’ve talked about in interviews before I had a fully realized idea of what they would become… see Eden isn’t a man, nor are they a woman.. they just are.“
  • Eden could represent Isaac's rebirth as a new person, which explains why their stats and items are always random.
  • Because of how Eden's stats work, Eden can start with a luck stat containing values in lower decimal places.
    • (except in Repentance and Repentance+) When actually used in most formulas, luck is rounded towards zero. This means Eden's effective starting luck is generally equivalent to 0.
    • (except in Repentance and Repentance+) Playing as Eden is the only way to have non-integer luck.
  • Eden's starting stats are listed as "?" on the character selection screen.
  • Eden's locked character icon is the Locked Chest from ending 1.
    • Eden (and (in Repentance and Repentance+) Character Tainted Eden icon.pngTainted Eden) is the only character who can become locked again, returning to their locked character icon if the player runs out of tokens.
  • During development, Edmund asked fans to contribute hairstyles for Eden. [1]
  • On the release of The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, Eden had 5 hairstyles.
  • (except in Rebirth and Afterbirth) Some of Eden's hairstyles added in the Booster Packs resemble the hairstyles of other playable characters, being Character Azazel icon.pngAzazel, Character Eve icon.pngEve, Character Lazarus icon.pngLazarus, (except in Rebirth) Character Lilith icon.pngLilith, Character Magdalene icon.pngMagdalene, and Character Samson icon.pngSamson.
    • (in Repentance and Repentance+) All of these hairstyles, except Azazel's, were changed in the V1.7.9b update to Repentance to reflect the updated hairstyles of each associated character.
    • (except in Rebirth and Afterbirth) One of Eden's hairstyles references the pre-release appearance of (except in Rebirth) Character Keeper icon.pngKeeper.
  • (except in Rebirth and Afterbirth) Some of Eden's other hairstyles are pop-culture references to characters such as Elsa from Frozen, Princess Leia from Star Wars, Marzipan from Homestar Runner, Lucas from Mother 3, and Frisk from Undertale.
