This article is about the boss. For the transformation, see Yes Mother (Transformation). For the final boss of Corpse, see Mother. For other uses, see Mom (Disambiguation).

Mom is the boss that appears on the second floor of Chapter 3 (DepthsDepths, NecropolisNecropolis, (except in Rebirth)Dank DepthsDank Depths). She is the initial final boss of the game, and defeating her for the first time unlocks both the Epilogue ending and Chapter 4 (WombWomb).

Behavior

Mom appears in a unique boss room that has a boss door in the center of all sides of the room. Mom can use these doorways to perform various attacks:

  • Stomps on Isaac's position, damaging nearby enemies and destroying obstacles. This attack is telegraphed by a growing shadow and her grunting.
    • She always begins the fight by stomping in the center of the room.
    • (except in Repentance) Stomping is considered as explosion damage.
      • (in Repentance) Stomping is now considered as contact damage in Repentance.
    • The foot itself does no contact damage.
      • (in Repentance) Changed to deal contact damage in Repentance.
  • If Isaac is near a door, Mom reaches out from it with her hand, dealing contact damage.
  • Sticks out a piece of flesh from a door and spawns a Monster with a maximum of 3 alive at once:

  • Sticks an eye out of a door, which does not attack but can deal contact damage.
  • All enemies spawned by Mom die alongside her, except for Globins, which collapse into piles of goo.

Mom deals one heart of contact damage.

Upon defeating Mom, all boss doors in the arena will disappear, trapping Isaac in the room unless he has a collectible or pickup effect that can teleport him out.

(in Repentance) Behavior in Mausoleum/Gehenna

A stronger version of Mom can be fought on the second floor of the MausoleumMausoleum and GehennaGehenna. This version of Mom has noticeably bluer veins on her leg and stronger variations of her attacks:

  • Stomps 3 times on Isaac's position in rapid succession, with the third stomp releasing explosions in the cardinal directions.
    • If an eye is already attacking, only 1 stomp will be performed.
    • She always begins the fight by stomping once in the center of the room, just like in Chapter 3.
  • Sticks an eye out of a door, and if Isaac is in line of sight, it shoots 2 Collectible Brimstone icon.pngBrimstone beams in a helix pattern towards the door on the opposite side.
    • If Mom had already initiated the 3-stomp attack, the eyes opened during it won't fire the beams.
  • Sticks out a piece of flesh from a door and spawns a Monster:

Cursed Globin.pngCursed Globin
Fetal Demon.pngFetal Demon
Rag Man's Ragling.pngRag Man's Ragling
Sucker.pngSucker
Psychic Horf.pngPsychic Horf
  • Unlike in Chapter 3, Mom never uses her hand attack.
  • All enemies spawned by Mom die alongside her, except for Cursed Globins, which collapse into 2 piles of goo.

Mom deals a whole heart of contact damage. This version of Mom never spawns as a champion.

Champion Versions Needs to be unlocked

Spider.pngSpider
Big Spider.pngBig Spider
Trite.pngTrite
Buttlicker.pngButtlicker
Keeper.pngKeeper
Red: Does not summon monsters at all, and instead repeatedly uses her foot stomp, which has increased speed. Occasionally, she will pause her stomps briefly to use one or both of the following attacks:
  • Stick an eye out from one of the doors, which shoots three blood shots in a spread formation at Isaac.
  • Reaches in with her hand through one of the doors, dealing contact damage, if Isaac is close enough to one.

Unlockable Achievements

Notes

  • Defeating Mom for the first time changes the current savefile's image and will allow unlocks to be obtained with mods enabled.
  • Using Collectible The Bible icon.pngThe Bible or (in Repentance)XV - The Devil?XV - The Devil? during the Mom boss fight kills her instantly and unlocks Collectible The Halo icon.pngThe Halo.
  • Using II - The High PriestessII - The High Priestess during the fight with Mom results in Isaac being targeted instead of the enemy with the highest health. However, the stomp can still damage Mom.
  • (except in Repentance) Mom's stomp attack counts as a bomb; this means Isaac can be immune to it with Collectible Pyromaniac icon.pngPyromaniac or (except in Rebirth)Collectible Host Hat icon.pngHost Hat.
    • (except in Repentance) With Collectible Pyromaniac icon.pngPyromaniac, Isaac can be healed when stomped.
    • (except in Repentance) Red Champion Mom is greatly negated with Collectible Pyromaniac icon.pngPyromaniac or (except in Rebirth)Collectible Host Hat icon.pngHost Hat.
    • (in Repentance) Mom's stomp attack now deals contact damage, causing immunity to explosions to no longer avoid damage from the stomp.
  • Mom cannot damage herself with her stomp attack.
  • Collectible Midas' Touch icon.pngMidas' Touch causes Mom's foot to be turned into gold before it lands.
  • Collectible The Polaroid icon.pngThe Polaroid will always spawn on the left pedestal and Collectible The Negative icon.pngThe Negative is always on the right.

Trivia

  • In Mom's entry in the bestiary, her "kills" value will never increase. It is unclear if this is a lore implication or a bug.
  • In The Binding of Isaac: Four Souls rendition of Credit Card, the name "Magdalene O. Moriah" can be seen carved in the credit card. The name was reused on the Four Souls+ rendition of (in Afterbirth † and Repentance)Collectible Divorce Papers icon.pngDivorce Papers. Edmund has confirmed that this is indeed Mom's full name.
    • The initials spell out "M.O.M.".
    • (in Repentance) This is further confirmed in-game during the background conversation during the Ascent, where Dad calls Mom "Maggy" as he tells her to shut up.
    • The last name "Moriah" is likely a reference to the biblical location of the same name. In the Bible, it is said that Moriah is where Abraham almost sacrificed his son before God sent an angel to stop his hand.
    • The playable character Character Magdalene icon.pngMagdalene shares a first name with Mom, but whether or not the two of them have connections remains yet to be known.
  • According to Edmund, the occupations of Mom and Dad are stay-at-home mom and handyman respectively.
  • Mom is voiced by Carla Kihlstedt.
  • The battle theme for this boss is "Matricide", a term for the killing of one's own mother.
  • Mom appeared in the original The Binding of Isaac.
    • In the original, Mom's voice was provided by Michelle Schroeder-Lowrey,[1] an associate of Jordan Fehr, the sound designer.
    • Unlike in Rebirth, Mom would shout "Isaac!" whenever she exposed her eye.
    • The battle theme in the original game was "Thine Wrath..."
  • Using the Collectible The Bible icon.pngThe Bible and killing Mom instantly is a reference to how a bible hits her head in the epilogue of the game, knocking her out or killing her.
  • Mom's eye appearing out of the doors could represent Mom's peeping in Isaac's room to check on him.
  • Mom constantly screaming "Isaac" seems to suggest how Mom was desperately trying to find her son.
  • Mom is the only final boss that has Champion variants.
  • During the versus screen, the "Isaac!" line from Mom can be heard, despite the battle not starting yet. She is one of (except in Repentance) seven/(in Repentance) five bosses that can be heard during the versus screen; the other (except in Repentance) six/(in Repentance) four are (in Afterbirth † and Repentance) Boss Big Horn ingame.pngBig Horn, (except in Rebirth) Boss The Stain ingame.pngThe Stain, (except in Rebirth) Boss The Forsaken ingame.pngThe Forsaken, (except in Repentance) Boss Mom's Heart ingame.pngMom's Heart, (except in Repentance) Boss It Lives ingame.pngIt Lives, and (in Repentance) Boss Mother secondphase ingame.pngMother.
  • If Isaac takes damage from Mom, she will laugh.
  • The skirt she wears on her in-game sprite is difficult to see in regular play, as her leg extends past the screen. Using the (in Afterbirth † and Repentance)Collectible Dataminer icon.pngDataminer or the (in Repentance)Collectible Meat Cleaver icon.pngMeat Cleaver can make the skirt visible.
    • (in Afterbirth † and Repentance) Delirium's Mom form appears to wear a pile of flesh and organs rather than a skirt.
  • Although Mom can't damage herself with her stomp attack, she still makes the same pained groan as when she takes damage if she stomps on her hand.
  • A disembodied version of Mom's leg stomp attack can be summoned as part of the effects of II - The High PriestessII - The High Priestess, Mom's ToenailMom's Toenail, (in Afterbirth † and Repentance)Collectible Broken Shovel 1 icon.pngBroken Shovel, and (in Repentance)II - The High Priestess?II - The High Priestess?.
  • (in Afterbirth † and Repentance) Prior to Booster Pack #5, Globins spawned by Mom could turn into (except in Rebirth) Dank Globin.pngDank Globins if she was fought in Dank Depths.
  • (in Repentance) When she is fought in the MausoleumMausoleum, her leg appears to be in a much more sickly state, with many varicose veins lining it.
    • Her hand also has a unique updated sprite, despite the fact that she never uses it in this fight.
  • (in Repentance) Boss Mother secondphase ingame.pngMother could be considered as her posthumous version.
