Death (Boss)

From The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth Wiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

Death is a Harbinger that can appear in all environments of Chapter 4 (WombWomb, UteroUtero, (except in Rebirth)Scarred WombScarred Womb).

Behavior

Phase 1

  • Spawns four Death Scythe.pngDeath Scythes along the walls of the room, aligned with Isaac in the cardinal directions. After a few seconds, they will accelerate towards Isaac.
    • If Isaac is close to a wall, the scythe that would normally be spawned on that wall does not spawn.
  • Spawns two Death Scythes in random positions around the room that constantly home in on Isaac until they are destroyed.
  • Uses Collectible The Hourglass icon.pngThe Hourglass to slow Isaac down.

Phase 2

After enough damage is dealt, Death will dismount from his horse. The horse has 150 HP, but it will also lose health when Death is damaged. Attacking the horse does not damage Death.

  • Death occasionally spawns two Knight.pngKnights and can have a maximum of two.
  • Death's horse continuously flies horizontally across the room going off-screen and continuing on from the opposite end of the screen.
    • Its charging patterns occur along 3 paths, starting with an upper charge into a middle charge a short distance below and finally a lower charge an identical distance below the middle path. It then restarts this process and can perform its upper charge in a new position in the room.
      • Its first charge will always leave room below it to allow for the lower second and third charges.
    • The horse continues to charge even after Death has been defeated.
    • It deals heavy damage to any enemy it runs into, except Death.

Both Death and his horse deal a whole heart of contact damage in both phases.

Champion Versions Needs to be unlocked

Black: 15% larger with 25% more HP (562.5). In his first phase, he summons Kamikaze Leech.pngKamikaze Leeches instead of homing Death Scythes and does not use the Hourglass. He spawns Red Maw.pngRed Maws rather than Knights after he dismounts from his horse.

Notes

  • When Death uses The Hourglass, Collectible The Ludovico Technique icon.pngThe Ludovico Technique's tear is slow to respond and has a higher maximum speed, becoming difficult to control.

Trivia

  • Death appeared in the original The Binding of Isaac.
  • Boss Conquest ingame.pngConquest is the alternate version of him.
  • Death is one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.
  • Death's scythe attack is a homage to Castlevania's recurring boss, Death. Both summon four scythes that stay put for a few seconds, then home in on the player.
  • (except in Repentance and Repentance+) Death is currently the only enemy in-game that can use a status effect against Isaac.
  • (in Repentance and Repentance+) Death is redrawn to resemble his sprite from the Flash Binding of Isaac, which, in turn, resembles the "planet face" of Chapter 6: The End in Super Meat Boy, another game by Edmund McMillen.

Bugs

Bug Bug! (in Repentance and Repentance+) Black champion Death's 2nd phase uses his normal (non-champion) appearance instead of his unique champion appearance, unless he takes damage, in which case he turns red permanently (the same shade any enemy turns, briefly, when they take damage). This was fixed in patch V1.7.8a.
