Onan's Streak is challenge #29. Character Judas icon.pngJudas starts with Collectible The Book of Belial icon.pngThe Book of Belial, Collectible Chocolate Milk icon.pngChocolate Milk, and a damage bonus of +2, giving him a starting damage of 8.71. However, missing a shot causes Judas to take damage. Treasure rooms are present in this challenge. The goal is to defeat Boss Isaac ingame.pngIsaac.

Difficulty

Not hitting anything with tears causes Judas to take damage. This makes accuracy very important, as missing a few shots can deplete his health very quickly. Because of this, fast-moving enemies or enemies with erratic movement patterns can prove to be very difficult in this challenge.

Notes

Strategy

  • Hitting any type of poop, fire, bomb, eternal fly, white champion enemy, spike block, or Stone Grimace.pngStone Grimace does not count as a miss.
  • If firing a tear and leaving the room before it touches the wall or floor, Judas will not take any damage. This is only useful if he shoots accidentally.
  • For enemies that move erratically, try and get close enough so they will close in. Once they approach, move out of the way and shoot them once they stop.

Good Items

  • Collectible Toxic Shock icon.pngToxic Shock can help Judas bypass most of the rooms without the need to fire tears.
  • Obtaining Collectible Fate's Reward icon.pngFate's Reward and charging your tears, but never firing, allows you to fire tears without fear of self-damage.
  • Items that negate damage are extremely useful. Collectible Holy Mantle icon.pngHoly Mantle, in particular, nullifies 1 hit of damage per room, allowing more room for error.
  • (except in Repentance and Repentance+) Taking Collectible Technology 2 icon.pngTechnology 2 and never releasing the fire keys, even across floors, allows Judas to engage enemies without firing any tears.
  • Taking Collectible Rubber Cement icon.pngRubber Cement is recommended, tears hitting a wall will not damage Judas, nor upon hitting the ground if an enemy is hit first.
    • Enemies include Stone Grimaces, unkillable enemies, fireplaces, poop, and bombs.

XboxOne Poop is not considered an enemy if it is the first object hit.

  • Collectible Proptosis icon.pngProptosis allows Judas' shots to miss without dealing damage as long as they don't hit a wall or non-tear-destructible object (such as a rock).
  • Collectible Isaac's Tears icon.pngIsaac's Tears do not count as a hit/miss, and it maintains Chocolate Milk's charged damage bonus when activated, making it a safe combat alternative.
  • Collectible Dead Eye icon.pngDead Eye benefits from this challenge, since the player will be focused on not missing anyways. This can allow for long streaks at high damage.
  • Collectible Tractor Beam icon.pngTractor Beam keeps tears in a straight line in front of Judas, which is very helpful for hitting many later enemies.
  • Collectible Ipecac icon.pngIpecac's explosion radius makes it much easier to hit enemies, though like in any other situation with the item, caution should be exercised.
  • Spectral tears might help, since going through a rock doesn't count as missing (but see the note on poop above; hitting poop no longer counts as a hit).
  • Collectible Pupula Duplex icon.pngPupula Duplex is helpful, since it gives Judas' tears a bigger hitbox, in addition to spectral tears. Flat WormFlat Worm also gives a bigger hitbox.
  • Similarly, Collectible Polyphemus icon.pngPolyphemus gives tears a bigger hitbox and allows Judas to hit many enemies with each tear. Any Polyphemus tear that continues after hitting an enemy won't damage Judas if it lands untouched afterward.
    • Collectible Continuum icon.pngContinuum will help, giving spectral tears and allowing tears to go through the walls to get back on the other side.
  • Piercing shots could be useful since the shots won't damage Judas if at least one enemy is hit, and multiple can be hit with one shot.
    • Collectible Death's Touch icon.pngDeath's Touch is especially useful because it increases the size of tears significantly, making it harder to miss, in addition to piercing and higher damage.
    • (except in Rebirth and Afterbirth)Collectible Eye of Belial icon.pngEye of Belial does not damage Judas as long as he hits at least one enemy, making the item very useful.
  • (except in Repentance and Repentance+)Collectible Brimstone icon.pngBrimstone, Collectible Epic Fetus icon.pngEpic Fetus, Collectible Mom's Knife icon.pngMom's Knife, Collectible Technology icon.pngTechnology, and Collectible Tech X icon.pngTech X won't damage Judas for missing enemies.
  • Collectible Mom's Wig icon.pngMom's Wig will keep spawning friendly spiders until there are five of them when charging the shot.
    • The same goes for the GuppyGuppy transformation or Collectible The Mulligan icon.pngThe Mulligan.
      • Be careful, however, as there is the possibility of friendly spiders/flies killing a target before Judas' fired tear connects.
    • The same goes for Collectible Number Two icon.pngNumber Two and Collectible Bob's Brain icon.pngBob's Brain, as spawning bombs under Judas while charging and the explosions from the brain, respectively, can easily end the run.
  • One well-timed charge of the Collectible White Pony icon.pngWhite Pony could be enough to insta-kill Boss It Lives ingame.pngIt Lives and seriously damage Boss Isaac ingame.pngIsaac.
  • Tears that have passed through an (except in Rebirth and Afterbirth)Collectible Angelic Prism icon.pngAngelic Prism familiar do not deal damage to Judas even if all the split tears miss.
  • If you find Collectible Butter Bean icon.pngButter Bean, do not leave behind bomb-giving items such as Collectible Pyro icon.pngPyro. Placing bombs and pushing them towards the enemy with a fart is a viable alternative for shooting tears.
  • Watch out when using unidentified pills, as R U a Wizard? can be disastrous to the run if not extremely careful and/or lucky. Check the shops for a Collectible PHD icon.pngPHD, just in case.
  • Collectible The Wafer icon.pngThe Wafer makes the challenge much easier in WombWomb and beyond, as it halves the damage dealt from missing tears.
  • Any item that helps refill red heart containers such as the Collectible Yum Heart icon.pngYum Heart, Collectible Maggy's Bow icon.pngMaggy's Bow, and Collectible The Jar icon.pngThe Jar will be helpful in case misses are frequent.
  • Items that grant homing tears, such as Collectible Spoon Bender icon.pngSpoon Bender and Collectible Sacred Heart icon.pngSacred Heart, can make accuracy a lot easier. However, Collectible Godhead icon.pngGodhead is a bad item for this challenge (see below).
  • (in Repentance and Repentance+)Brain WormBrain Worm can redirect misfires back into enemies, thus being a great mistake preventer.
  • A very good strategy is to combine many different followers such as Collectible Mongo Baby icon.pngMongo Baby, Collectible Rotten Baby icon.pngRotten Baby, or Isaac's HeadIsaac's Head, and only using the tears from the followers as Judas' main source of damage. This is complimented by items such as Collectible Daddy Longlegs icon.pngDaddy Longlegs, as Judas does not have to fire tears to deal damage with these followers.
    • Because of this, Collectible BFFS! icon.pngBFFS! is a very useful item.
  • Collectible The Boomerang icon.pngThe Boomerang will not cause damage if it misses, making it an effective alternative to tears given Judas' high damage. It will also petrify enemies, making them much easier to hit with tears.
  • (except in Repentance and Repentance+)Collectible The Ludovico Technique icon.pngThe Ludovico Technique is an extremely valuable item since the tear never lands, thus Judas can't be hurt if it misses.
  • (except in Rebirth and Afterbirth)Collectible Lachryphagy icon.pngLachryphagy's split shots do not count as missed tears. Since your tears will always explode into split shots instead of hitting the ground, Judas will only take damage if the main Lachryphagy shot hits a wall.
    • Having Spectral tears with Lachryphagy will prevent your shots from ever hitting the floor or walls, completely removing the penalty for missing.
  • (except in Rebirth and Afterbirth)Collectible Haemolacria icon.pngHaemolacria can be powerful, as only the initial tear needs to hit an enemy; the burst tears do not count, unlike for other scatter shot items.
  • (except in Rebirth and Afterbirth)Collectible Shard of Glass icon.pngShard of Glass's blood shots do not deal damage to you if they miss, making this item potentially very useful in this challenge.
  • (in Repentance and Repentance+)Collectible The Intruder icon.pngThe Intruder's quad shot does not count as hits/misses, and taking damage, including damage from a missed shot, summons the more effective active familiar.
  • (in Repentance and Repentance+)Collectible Stitches icon.pngStitches can be used to dodge damage from missed shots if timed correctly. Its teleport can also be used as damage so you don't have to risk missing shots.
  • (in Repentance and Repentance+)Collectible 120 Volt icon.png120 Volt removes the need to fire tears at enemies in normal rooms, allowing Judas to destroy crowds of enemies just by walking by them.
  • Collectible Glass Cannon icon.pngGlass Cannon is recommended since cannon ball tears need to hit only one enemy in order to not deal damage to the player. It also shoots bigger tears than normal to due the high starting damage.
  • (in Repentance and Repentance+)Collectible Saturnus icon.pngSaturnus is recommended since the tears created by it do not count as a miss if they fall to the floor. However, enemy tears that get in the ring do count as misses when they fall.
  • Collectible Rubber Cement icon.pngRubber Cement combined with (except in Rebirth and Afterbirth)Collectible Lachryphagy icon.pngLachryphagy makes it so that Judas can't be damaged by his own tears at all.
  • Collectible Continuum icon.pngContinuum combined with Collectible Proptosis icon.pngProptosis makes it so that Judas can't be damaged by his own tears at all.

Bad Items

  • (except in Repentance and Repentance+) Taking Collectible Tammy's Head icon.pngTammy's Head or Collectible Sad Bombs icon.pngSad Bombs is not recommended, as they release tears which all count as hits or misses. Since they release multiple tears at a time, they will almost unavoidably cause tears to hit the ground.
    • (in Repentance and Repentance+) Tears released from Tammy's Head or Sad Bombs no longer count as misses or hits.
    • Collectible Isaac's Tears icon.pngIsaac's Tears, however, do not.
    • The Collectible Tear Detonator icon.pngTear Detonator does not count either.
  • Unless Judas already has piercing tears, Collectible Lost Contact icon.pngLost Contact should generally be avoided. While blocking a shot does count as a hit, without piercing, it will also destroy the tear before it can do any damage, making bullet-heavy fights such as Boss Mom's Heart ingame.pngMom's Heart/ Boss It Lives ingame.pngIt Lives and Boss Isaac ingame.pngIsaac extraordinarily difficult.
  • Shots fired by the familiar with Collectible Incubus icon.pngIncubus / (in Repentance and Repentance+)Collectible Cain's Other Eye icon.pngCain's Other Eye will damage the player.
  • Taking any item that multiplies the number of tears (e.g. Collectible 20 20 icon.png20/20, Collectible The Inner Eye icon.pngThe Inner Eye, Collectible Mutant Spider icon.pngMutant Spider, or (except in Repentance and Repentance+)Collectible Monstro's Lung icon.pngMonstro's Lung) is not recommended, as Judas has to hit with every tear to not take damage.
    • Similarly, taking Collectible Multidimensional Baby icon.pngMultidimensional Baby, (except in Rebirth and Afterbirth)Collectible Compound Fracture icon.pngCompound Fracture, Collectible Cricket's Body icon.pngCricket's Body, or Collectible The Parasite icon.pngThe Parasite is not recommended, as the split tears also have to hit enemies for the player to not take damage.
    • Be careful picking up too many familiars, as picking up 3 will transform Judas into ConjoinedConjoined, which will make him shoot 2 additional tears at an angle and damage Judas if they miss.
    • (except in Rebirth and Afterbirth) Be careful when picking up any active Book items, as picking up 3 will transform Judas into a BookwormBookworm, periodically giving him 2 shots.
  • Collectible Godhead icon.pngGodhead can be dangerous, as even if the aura kills an enemy, if the shot doesn't hit an enemy or poop, it will count as a miss.
  • When using Collectible Maw Of The Void icon.pngMaw Of The Void, keep some distance against non-boss enemies. If the ring kills an enemy before the tear hits it, it can cause Judas to miss the shot.
  • Collectible Circle of Protection icon.pngCircle of Protection: Judas can take damage from tears reflected by the ring.
  • Collectible Explosivo icon.pngExplosivo should be avoided. The Explosivo shot doesn't count as hitting the enemy until it blows up. If Judas kills an enemy with the Explosivo shot on them, the tear will fall to the ground and will damage him. Enemies that jump or teleport will also cause Explosivo shots to fall off. If the enemy with an Explosivo shot walks near a wall, the tear will disappear and will cause damage.
    • (in Repentance and Repentance+) Non-exploded Explosivo tears that fall to the ground no longer cause damage. Explosivo is a valuable damage upgrade now.
  • Collectible Soy Milk icon.pngSoy Milk is not recommended, as it prevents charging shots (instead, firing automatically like regular tears). Judas does get a +1 damage increase after the damage reduction, but the fast fire rate will make it nearly impossible to stop tears hitting anything other than an enemy.
    • (in Repentance and Repentance+)Collectible Almond Milk icon.pngAlmond Milk similarly prevents charging shots and adds an unpredictable worm effect.
  • Taking Collectible The Wiz icon.pngThe Wiz is not recommended, as firing two tears simultaneously will almost certainly cause one tear to miss.
  • Taking Collectible My Reflection icon.pngMy Reflection is not recommended, as firing a tear from a long distance causes the tear to reverse back the opposite direction and miss unless there is an enemy behind Judas.
  • (except in Repentance and Repentance+) Hitting a target while having Collectible Cursed Eye icon.pngCursed Eye still damages and teleports out of the room.
    • (in Repentance and Repentance+) No damage will be taken if all tears hit a target. However, this can be difficult to achieve, so Cursed Eye is not recommended.
    • Charging shots before entering a room can kill, since it will fire (except in Repentance and Repentance+) a big tear followed by 3 little tears (in Repentance and Repentance+) 5 big tears, causing damage.
  • Collectible 3 Dollar Bill icon.png3 Dollar Bill, Collectible Fruit Cake icon.pngFruit Cake, and Rainbow WormRainbow Worm are not recommended because the changing effects will make it more likely for tears to miss.
  • Collectible Libra icon.pngLibra will balance stats, making Judas' damage much less effective and thus necessitating more shots.
  • Collectible Bob's Rotten Head icon.pngBob's Rotten Head will harm Judas if it fails to connect, so it is not recommended unless used for combat.
  • Using (except in Rebirth and Afterbirth)Collectible Clicker icon.pngClicker may take away Collectible Chocolate Milk icon.pngChocolate Milk, making the run significantly more difficult.
  • (in Afterbirth †) The instant kill effect of Collectible Little Horn icon.pngLittle Horn does not count as a hit, and will hurt Judas.
  • (except in Repentance and Repentance+)Collectible Trisagion icon.pngTrisagion will cause Judas to take damage on every shot.
  • (except in Rebirth and Afterbirth)Collectible Flat Stone icon.pngFlat Stone will cause Judas to take damage on every tear's skip unless the tear hits an enemy before the next bounce.
  • (except in Repentance and Repentance+)Collectible Ghost Pepper icon.pngGhost Pepper will deal damage to Judas each time the blue flame spawns.
    • (except in Repentance and Repentance+)Collectible Bird's Eye icon.pngBird's Eye has a similar effect.
    • (in Repentance and Repentance+) The flames can still kill enemies before the shots reach them, resulting in taking damage.
  • (in Repentance and Repentance+)Collectible Twisted Pair icon.pngTwisted Pair is not recommended, as tears from each familiar count as needing to land, or else Judas will take damage.
  • (in Repentance and Repentance+)Collectible Urn of Souls icon.pngUrn of Souls will harm Judas for each full shot fired.
  • (in Repentance and Repentance+)Collectible Revelation icon.pngRevelation is likely to kill any basic enemy it hits before the Chocolate Milk shot reaches it, making it difficult to avoid damage when firing charged shots.
  • (in Repentance and Repentance+)Collectible Neptunus icon.pngNeptunus fires many shots at once, making it very easy for the player to shoot more than needed and cause self-damage.
  • (in Repentance and Repentance+)Collectible Strawman icon.pngStrawman is basically useless, as The Keeper's tears will also damage themself (not Judas), essentially killing themself in a few seconds due to The Keeper firing automatically while Judas charges up Chocolate Milk.
  • (in Repentance and Repentance+)Collectible Eye of the Occult icon.pngEye of the Occult will generally make it harder to control your tears and will probably result in a failed run.

Reward

Trivia

  • The challenge's name, "Onan's Streak", and the challenge conditions are a reference to the biblical character Onan, the son of Judah. According to Old Testament law, a man with a married, deceased brother would have the responsibility of producing an heir for his sibling. Onan knew that having this heir would prevent him from legally owning his brother's land, and so spilled his semen onto the ground. God viewed this deed as wicked and killed Onan.
  • (except in Repentance and Repentance+) Despite the challenge starring Character Judas icon.pngJudas, the challenge is only unlocked when beating Boss Mom ingame.pngMom.

Bugs

Bug Bug! If Judas misses a tear and picks up the trophy while getting hit, he will be frozen in position. Going to the main menu and continuing the run solves this.
