R Key

R Key is an activated item added in The Binding of Isaac: Repentance.

Effects

• Returns Isaac to the beginning of the run in Chapter 1, with all stat boosts, items, pickups, and trinkets intact, similar to a Victory Lap. Unlike a Victory Lap, however, no effects are applied after a certain number of uses, and the timer is not reset.

Notes

• Angel Rooms once again become possible to appear even if the player has made a previous devil deal.
• The chance for a Planetarium to appear can once again be increased above 1% without a Telescope Lens, even if the player has previously entered a Planetarium.
• If the Donation Machine was jammed before usage, it will no longer be jammed.
• True Co-Op players can be spawned in at the first room after using the R Key.
• If used in a run while achievements and character unlocks are enabled, they will still be enabled after use. Similarly, if these are disabled because the player is in a Victory Lap or seeded run, they will remain disabled after use.
  • Beware that using R Key during a Victory Lap will reset the lap counter to 0, as though every Victory Lap is considered part of the same run. Shops will appear as normal, and no items will be removed upon starting the next lap. However, the character will remain The Lost if it had been changed, and the game will remain on Hard difficulty.
• The timer and score do not reset.
  • This means that the timer requirements to access Boss Rush, ???, and Broken Shovel do NOT reset.
• Item pools are not reset. This means that another R Key can't spawn (and neither can any other items that were already encountered).
• The 13 pill pool does not reset, unlike with a victory lap.
• Due to the acquisition of Key Piece 1 and Key Piece 2 being dependent on whether or not the items are currently in Isaac's possession, R Key may be used to revisit previous floors and collect the pieces again after already consuming them in the Chest or Dark Room to unlock Mega Satan's door.
• Since Knife Piece 1 and Knife Piece 2 will spawn any time their respective floors are visited, R Key may be used to revisit these floors and obtain multiple copies of the items.
• In scenarios where R Key can be purchased, it uniquely costs 99 coins instead of 15.
  • This rule does not apply to the extra shop created by Member Card.
  • This rule also does not apply to devil deals spawned by A Pound of Flesh.
  • Despite this, using IX - The Hermit? on R Key will still only spawn 15 coins.
• In Greed mode, using the item after breaking the Greed Donation Machine will fix the machine, while also preserving the coin total the machine had before breaking.
• R Key cannot be obtained in the Daily Challenge.
  • This includes through use of a Death Certificate.

Interactions

• Car Battery: No effect.
• Dad's Note: Using R Key during the Ascent sequence will end it.

Trivia

• R Key originates from the Antibirth mod.
• This item is a reference to how holding down the R key on PC will restart a run.
• This item is very similar to Clone from Enter the Gungeon. The only difference is that R Key is an activated item while Clone is a passive item that activates upon death.

Bugs

Bug!	While difficult, it is possible to use R Key while swapping it out with another active item, allowing to bring a different active item to the restarted run.

Bug!	If Sprinkler is used on the room the R Key is used in, the sprinkler will come with Isaac to the starting room.

Bug!	If you use the R Key then spawn in a True Co-Op player and restart the game, the Co-Op players' active item and health will disappear.

Bug!	If you use the R Key during a victory lap, then exit and re-enter the run, unlocks will be re-enabled.
