Wisps are orbital familiars that are created by the Book of VirtuesBook of Virtues. This article lays out the effects and stats of the wisps Isaac can create, mostly covering Book of VirtuesBook of Virtues synergies.

Unique Wisps

Descriptions for the following wisp stats:

  • Item: The item that spawns the following wisp. Everything JarEverything Jar, Esau Jr.Esau Jr., Mom's BoxMom's Box, Pandora's BoxPandora's Box, R KeyR Key, and Death CertificateDeath Certificate only spawn normal wisps, and have no unique effects.
  • Orbit: The ring around Isaac the wisp occupies. The Inner ring can hold 6 wisps, the Center ring can hold 8 wisps, and the Outer ring can hold 12 wisps. Wisps that don't orbit Isaac will count as “other” and have their unique behavior in the notes.
  • HP: The amount of hits the wisp can take before being destroyed. Contact damage and explosions count as two hits taken. Wisps are immune to damage if Isaac is Shielded/Invulnerable or under the effects of Gnawed LeafGnawed Leaf. Invulnerability frames from taking damage do not count.
  • Tear Damage: The damage the wisp's tears do. All wisps deal an additional +0.1 tear damage for every floor deeper into the game Isaac is. Note that the contact damage the wisps deal is 2x Isaac's damage per tick (4x Isaac's damage per second) and is unaffected by the wisp type, with a few exceptions.
    • BFFS!BFFS! will double the base damage, contact damage, and damage scaling per floor of the wisps, and Forgotten LullabyForgotten Lullaby will double their fire rate.
  • Tear Delay: The number of frames the wisp has to wait between firing tears. 30 frames equals one second.
  • Tear Effects: Any special tear effects/modifiers the wisp's tears have, such as Homing or Poison, and the chance of that effect occurring if it is a chance.
  • Notes: Any other effects the wisp has that are worth noting.

Teleport!Teleport! Center ring 3 4 30 Teleport (10%) The teleport effect teleports non-boss enemies hit by the tear to a random location in the current room; it does not affect Isaac. The wisps also temporarily vanish every 5 seconds, preventing them from blocking shots or taking/dealing damage.
Yum HeartYum Heart Center ring 2 3 30 None Enemies killed by the wisps' tears have a 20% chance to drop a full red heart.
Doctor's RemoteDoctor's Remote Center ring 1 1.5 30 None When Doctor's Remote is used, the wisps fire two inaccurate, explosive tears at the crosshair in an arc that deal 14 damage (28 if Isaac has BFFS!BFFS!).
Shoop da Whoop!Shoop da Whoop! Outer ring 2.5 1.5 30 None The wisps also fire lasers when Isaac uses Shoop da Whoop!. The lasers deal 7 damage per tick (BUG: 3.5 if Isaac has BFFS!BFFS!), and can hit up to 10 times for a total of 70 damage. Multiple lasers can hit the same enemy.
Lemon MishapLemon Mishap Center ring 1 1.5 10 None The wisps' tears have decreased range. The wisps themselves occasionally leave small puddles of yellow creep that last for 3 seconds and deal 7 damage per tick to enemies that walk over them (56 damage per second).
Book of ShadowsBook of Shadows Center ring 1 1.5 30 None The wisps are immune to damage from blocking projectiles.
Anarchist CookbookAnarchist Cookbook Center ring 1 3 30 None The wisps spawn troll bombs when destroyed. These troll bombs will use Isaac's bomb synergies.
The HourglassThe Hourglass Center ring 1 1.5 30 None The wisps slow all enemies in the room for 3 seconds when destroyed. If the Hourglass is used or extra wisps are destroyed while the slow is in effect, it's duration is extended.
My Little UnicornMy Little Unicorn Center ring 3 4 30 None The wisps orbit Isaac more quickly than normal wisps and change colors constantly, with both of these effects being boosted while My Little Unicorn is active. The wisps also deal an extra 8 contact damage.

For the troll bomb effect, the pill itself spawns the troll bomb instead of the tear, and the chance for it to do so is independent of whether or not its tears hit anything.

A PonyA Pony Center ring 2 Other Other None The wisps charge in the direction Isaac shoots instead of firing tears. While charging, the wisps deal contact damage equal to 40% of Isaac's damage per tick (120% of Isaac's damage per second) and are immune to damage. Wisps must wait 2.5 seconds after hitting a wall before they can charge again. The wisps deal their normal contact damage while not charging.
Guppy's PawGuppy's Paw Center ring 20 3.5 30 None Spawns 3 wisps for every heart container consumed in addition to granting soul hearts.

The JarThe Jar Center ring 1.5 2 30 None When The Jar is used, any red hearts that would drop are instead turned into wisps. The health and damage of the wisps is unaffected by whether or not the hearts would be half hearts or full hearts. The wisps have a chance to drop half red hearts when destroyed.

The wisps do not take contact damage, but also don't deal contact damage if Unicorn Stump isn't active. If Unicorn Stump is active, the wisps deal contact damage equal to 2x Isaac's damage -5. If Isaac has less than 2.5 damage, the wisps will deal no damage even if Unicorn Stump is active.
Isaac's TearsIsaac's Tears Center ring 0.5 1 30 None Summons six wisps at a time. Using Isaac's Tears destroys the previous set of wisps. The wisps are automatically destroyed after three seconds.

Tear DetonatorTear Detonator Center ring 2 2 30 None The wisps' tears burst into 6 of Isaac's tears when Tear Detonator is used. They also burst into 6 tears and invoke the effect of Tear Detonator when destroyed. Despite Tear Detonator having a timed recharge, the wisps persist between rooms.

Mine CrafterMine Crafter Other Other No tears No tears None The wisp cannot take or deal damage in any way, and bounces around the room in a random direction instead of following Isaac. If the wisp is shot by Isaac or his familiars, it explodes, dealing 100 damage to nearby enemies. The wisp does not persist between rooms. Explosions and enemy shots do not detonate it, and the wisps' explosions are unaffected by BFFS!BFFS! and bomb synergies.
Jar of FliesJar of Flies Center ring 2 * Blue Flies in the wisp 1 + 0.5 per Blue Fly in the wisp 30 None Using Jar of Flies summons wisps instead of Blue Flies; the wisps do not summon the flies when destroyed. Up to five flies at a time are consumed to summon one wisp, with stacking health and damage. The damage of the wisps decreases as they take damage. Enemies killed by wisps’ tears will not add flies to the jar.
D7D7 Center ring 2 3 30 None The wisps start gray; if the wisps get hit while they’re gray, they invoke the effect of the D7 in the current room and turn blue. Damage that turns the wisps from gray to blue is negated.

Plan CPlan C Center ring 2 12 30 None Spawns eight wisps on use. As Plan C will still kill Isaac after using it, he must have a respawn in order to use the wisps.
D1D1 Center ring 2 3 30 None An extra wisp spawns if no pickups are duplicated.
PausePause Center ring 2 3 30 None Wisps pause all enemies and enemy shots for 3 seconds when destroyed. This effect is not cancelled by shooting tears.
SmelterSmelter Center ring 2 3 30 None The wisps have a chance to spawn trinkets when destroyed.
CompostCompost Center ring See notes 3 30 None The wisp will only be summoned if Compost destroys at least one pickup, and the wisp's health will be equal to the number of pickups converted to Blue Flies/Spiders. If Isaac hits the blue fly cap of 64 as a result of using Compost, all but one of Isaac's wisps will despawn.

Does not affect wisps other than ones made by this item. Using Crooked Penny always spawns one wisp, with no chance to affect the others.
Dull RazorDull Razor Center ring 2 No tears No tears None Whenever Isaac takes damage, there is a chance that the damage is negated and one of the wisps is destroyed instead. "Damage" taken from using Dull Razor does not count for this effect.
Potato PeelerPotato Peeler Other Infinite 3 30 None The wisps do not orbit Isaac, block shots, or deal contact damage. Instead, they chase and constantly shoot at nearby enemies.
Brown NuggetBrown Nugget Center ring 2 1 10 None The wisps automatically shoot at nearby enemies instead of in the direction Isaac shoots. The wisps do not persist between rooms.
Sharp StrawSharp Straw Outer ring 0.5 3 30 None Enemies have a chance to spawn wisps when they’re killed by Sharp Straw. Despite Sharp Straw having a timed charge, the wisps persist between rooms.

Moving BoxMoving Box Center ring 2 3 30 None Moving Box must drop a pickup/item in order for it to spawn wisps. The wisps invoke the effect of The Book of SinThe Book of Sin when destroyed.
Mr. ME!Mr. ME! Center ring 2 No tears No tears None If the current room is cleared, the wisps automatically move toward and unlock chests and special room doors, destroying themselves in the process. The wisps can open ANY locked doors, including the ones to Mega Satan, the Ascent, and Corpse. Stone/Mega Chests are unaffected.
Sacrificial AltarSacrificial Altar Center ring 12 6 30 None All other wisps are turned into half red hearts in the process. LemegetonLemegeton's wisps instead become half soul hearts.
Book of the DeadBook of the Dead Inner ring 3 4 30 None The wisps spawn friendly Bonys when destroyed. The book will summon wisps regardless of whether or not there were enemies killed in the current room, and the ring of wisps is close enough to Isaac to be inside the ring of bone orbitals Book of the Dead makes.

  • Vade RetroVade Retro: Ghosts created by enemies very slowly move and shoot tears in the same direction Isaac is shooting. The ghosts' tears deal 3.5 damage, and are fired once every second. No wisps are created when using Vade Retro. The wisps' damage are unaffected by the enemy they spawned from.
  • VoidVoid: Spawns the wisps of all the active items it's absorbed. Spawns no wisps by itself. Using Void on Book of Virtues will give stat upgrades instead of its normal effect, as Book of Virtues is considered a passive item.
