(except in Rebirth and Afterbirth)

Lachryphagy is an unlockable passive item added in The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth † (Booster Pack #4).

Effects

  • Isaac's tears decelerate as they travel. Upon stopping or hitting an obstacle, they burst into tears that fly in all directions. Hitting an enemy will not cause them to burst.
    • (except in Repentance and Repentance+) They burst into 8 tears.
    • (in Repentance and Repentance+) They burst into 5-8 tears, depending on tear size.
  • Tears can be fired into other tears to feed them, increasing their damage and the damage of the burst tears.
    • If one tear is fed 5 other tears, it will immediately burst.
    • The tears will have their damage added together, with the first consumed tear giving additional damage.
    • Tears in the burst will deal half the damage the main tear would have.
    • This also applies to Familiar tears.

Notes

  • Certain items that cause tears to split and feed each other, when combined, can cause the resulting tear to become so large that the game will crash.
  • Tears can also burst from shot size. With sufficiently high damage or several tear-size increasing items, the tears will burst almost immediately after firing.
  • The distance burst tears fly depends on tear height and not range.

Synergies

  • Collectible 20 20 icon.png20/20 / Collectible The Inner Eye icon.pngThe Inner Eye / Collectible Mutant Spider icon.pngMutant Spider: Tears tend to clump together soon after firing for high damage shots. It may take more than 5 tears in total to cause a burst.
  • (in Repentance and Repentance+)Collectible Akeldama icon.pngAkeldama: Akeldama tears can feed and be fed by the Lachryphagy tears. Fed Akeldama tears will gain increased damage but will not burst, and will cap at 5 tears fed each.
  • Collectible Bob's Rotten Head icon.pngBob's Rotten Head: The head act as a tear, dividing itself if enough time has passed and interacting with other tears. The five heads coming from the main head deal half damage. Feeding a head with another increases damage by the amount of damage Isaac has. If a tear is fed with a head, the tear will gain the head's damage.
  • (in Repentance and Repentance+)Collectible Book of Virtues icon.pngBook of Virtues / (in Repentance and Repentance+)Collectible Jar of Wisps icon.pngJar of Wisps: Wisps' tears can feed the Lachryphagy tears.
  • (in Repentance and Repentance+) Collectible Brimstone icon.pngBrimstone: Brimstone's range is now limited, but piercing Lachryphagy tears will quickly form at the end of the beam.
    • Character Azazel icon.pngAzazel: Lachryphagy effectively leaves Azazel's brimstone unchanged given it already has limited range.
  • Collectible Compound Fracture icon.pngCompound Fracture: Bone tears split into a random spread of fractured tears and bone tears.
  • Collectible Cricket's Body icon.pngCricket's Body / Collectible The Parasite icon.pngThe Parasite: Fed tears split into 12 tears.
  • Collectible Dead Eye icon.pngDead Eye Firing into the floating tear won't reset the multiplier as long as that tear doesn't hit a wall. The burst tears will never reset the multiplier.
  • Collectible Euthanasia icon.pngEuthanasia: Needle shots will allow the tears to burst at least twice.
  • Collectible Eye of Belial icon.pngEye of Belial: Tear burst retains Eye of Belial's effect, greatly increasing the effectiveness of the tear burst due to the piercing, spectral, and increased tear damage. By proxy, piercing, spectral, and continuum tears all improve the value of Lachyphagy.
  • Collectible Evil Eye icon.pngEvil Eye: can compound tears with Lachryphagy.
  • Collectible Haemolacria icon.pngHaemolacria: Tears look like Haemolacria. They can be fed and will burst into 8 tears that have Haemolacria's burst effect upon hitting obstacles or enemies.
    • (in Repentance and Repentance+) Haemolacria + Collectible Brimstone icon.pngBrimstone / Collectible Tech X icon.pngTech X / Collectible Technology icon.pngTechnology: The tears behave like Lachryphagy tears. On hitting enemies, they always burst into respective Lachryphagy-synergized lasers (if available), but on hitting a wall or an obstacle, slower-moving shots burst into normal shots and faster ones into lasers.
  • Collectible Kidney Stone icon.pngKidney Stone: When a barrage of tears is fired, tears clump together and burst at a high rate. The stone also behaves as a Lachryphagy tear. Because of the tear height decrease, burst tears cover much shorter distance before falling, making the combination less effective.
  • Collectible Lost Contact icon.pngLost Contact: Both the original tear and the burst tears can block enemy shots. The tears' size is increased, so it is easier to feed them.
  • Collectible A Lump of Coal icon.pngA Lump of Coal: Tears continually grow in size without being fed other tears, but they will still only deal bonus damage based strictly on how far they travel. Burst tears will still grow in size and damage as they travel.
  • Collectible Monstro's Lung icon.pngMonstro's Lung / Collectible Lead Pencil icon.pngLead Pencil: The tears clump together soon after firing, causing potentially up to 20x tear damage on a direct hit on an enemy.
  • Collectible My Reflection icon.pngMy Reflection: Causes tears to float back towards Isaac and clump together with any tears they come along.
  • Pulse WormPulse Worm: The fluctuating hitboxes of the tears causes them to clump together at a faster rate.
  • (in Repentance and Repentance+)Collectible Revelation icon.pngRevelation: The beam's range is now limited, but piercing Lachryphagy tears will form at the end of it.
  • Collectible Sinus Infection icon.pngSinus Infection: Boogers will always burst into more boogers, though some of the boogers may incorrectly appear to be normal tears. When a booger sticks to an enemy, it will burst into 8 boogers which have a high chance of sticking again to the same enemy.
  • (in Repentance and Repentance+) Collectible Technology icon.pngTechnology: Technology's range is now limited, but piercing Lachryphagy tears will form at the end of the beam.
  • (in Repentance and Repentance+) Collectible Technology 2 icon.pngTechnology 2: Significantly shortens the range of the laser. A piercing Lachryphagy tear spawns at the end of the laser every tick, rapidly feeding off of each other and bursting when standing still.
  • Collectible Tiny Planet icon.pngTiny Planet: (except in Repentance and Repentance+) Tears will orbit until they are behind the character. Tears will burst into 8 tears that follow the orbit in 2 close groups of 4. One group travels clockwise and the other travels counterclockwise.
    • (in Repentance and Repentance+) Tears orbit the player without slowing down, and can be fed as normal. When a tear bursts, the created tears orbit the place of burst.
  • (except in Repentance and Repentance+)Collectible Tractor Beam icon.pngTractor Beam: All split tears will travel along the beam.
  • (in Repentance and Repentance+) Collectible Trisagion icon.pngTrisagion: Trisagion tears will fade faster, but will constantly spit out more piercing Lachryphagy tears while they are active.

Interactions

  • (except in Repentance and Repentance+)Collectible Brimstone icon.pngBrimstone: Lachryphagy does not affect regular Brimstone beams, but tears from other sources such as Collectible Isaac's Tears icon.pngIsaac's Tears or Collectible Fate's Reward icon.pngFate's Reward will burst into 8 Brimstone beams. Lachryphagy affects Chocolate Milk + Brimstone.
  • Chaos CardChaos Card: Counts as a tear and will be wasted if thrown into another tear.
  • Collectible Dr. Fetus icon.pngDr. Fetus: Overrides Lachryphagy.
  • Collectible Epic Fetus icon.pngEpic Fetus: Overrides Lachryphagy.
  • Collectible Flat Stone icon.pngFlat Stone: Overridden by Lachryphagy.
  • Collectible Ipecac icon.pngIpecac: Lachryphagy tears will burst into ipecac shots and explode. The Ipecac tear burst will travel like a normal tear instead of an arc. Due to tear slowdown effect it becomes hard to hit enemies without standing in the explosion radius.
  • Collectible The Ludovico Technique icon.pngThe Ludovico Technique: Overrides Lachryphagy.
  • Collectible Mom's Knife icon.pngMom's Knife: No effect.
  • Collectible Pop! icon.pngPop!: Tears behave erratically, with freshly fired tears usually behaving like Lachryphagy and burst tears like Pop!.
  • (in Repentance and Repentance+)Collectible Saturnus icon.pngSaturnus: Orbiting tears are Lachryphagy tears, including enemy tears caught in orbit. Tears will still burst after a set duration, greatly the reducing the amount of time the tears orbit for. Burst tears will remain in an orbital path instead of spreading out.
  • Collectible Stop Watch icon.pngStop Watch / Collectible Broken Watch icon.pngBroken Watch / Era WalkEra Walk: Tears are slowed/sped up along with enemies.
  • Collectible Tech X icon.pngTech X: Overrides Lachryphagy.
  • (except in Repentance and Repentance+)Collectible Technology icon.pngTechnology: Overrides Lachryphagy.
  • (except in Repentance and Repentance+)Collectible Trisagion icon.pngTrisagion: Tears will split but cannot be grown by feeding tears.

Bugs

Bug Bug! (in Repentance and Repentance+) In the battle with Boss The Beast ingame.pngThe Beast and the Ultra Harbingers, outputting high amounts of Lachryphagy tears can cause the damage from all the tears offscreen to be instantly applied to each entity the moment they arrive to fight Isaac.
Bug Bug! Collectible Rubber Cement icon.pngRubber Cement causes all tears on screen to have their damage applied to any enemy that gets hit by a tear.
