Hallowed Ground is an unlockable passive item added in The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth † (Booster Pack #5).

Effect

  • Spawns a white poop familiar, which turns into a White Poop.pngWhite Poop when Isaac is hurt.
    • White Poop has an aura that multiplies both fire rate and tear delay by x2.5 and has a 50% chance to ignore damage similarly to Collectible Cone Head icon.pngCone Head except the chance is higher.
    • (in Repentance and Repentance+) White Poop has similar durability to Golden Poop.pngGolden Poop. The aura additionally increases damage by 20% and gives Isaac's tears a homing effect.
    • Hallowed Ground will not activate if the player negates the source damage through items such as Collectible Holy Mantle icon.pngHoly Mantle.
  • The familiar will respawn after Isaac leaves the room.
  • (in Repentance and Repentance+) This item belongs to the Oh CrapOh Crap set. Collecting three items from this set will transform Isaac into a walking pile of poop.

Notes

  • Aligning a white poop to drop next to a Devil Beggar.pngDevil Beggar, a Blood Donation Machine.pngBlood Donation Machine or a (in Repentance and Repentance+) Confessional.pngConfessional is a great way to save on health, as the aura will allow for frequent free plays.
  • Damage from Sacrifice RoomSacrifice Room spikes can be blocked by Hallowed Ground, but no payout is rewarded.
  • White Poop is impervious to enemy shots and charging attacks.
  • White Poop is not immune to explosive damage or stomping attacks.
  • Chubber.pngChubber attacks cannot destroy White Poop, but can still harm Isaac.
  • (in Repentance and Repentance+) Familiars that follow behind Isaac have a certain priority in how close their position is to him over other familiars, with Hallowed Ground having the lowest priority at 6th and thus being farther from Isaac than familiars of different priorities.
  • (in Repentance and Repentance+) This item does not produce White Poop in Boss The Beast ingame.pngThe Beast's boss arena.

Synergies

  • A Card Against HumanityA Card Against Humanity / Re-Lax pill: The poops created have a Luck-independent chance to become white.
  • Collectible Blood Rights icon.pngBlood Rights/Collectible IV Bag icon.pngIV Bag/Collectible Kamikaze! icon.pngKamikaze!/Collectible Razor Blade icon.pngRazor Blade: The aura has a chance to block the damage inflicted, but the effects will still occur.
  • (in Repentance and Repentance+)Collectible Dirty Mind icon.pngDirty Mind: Destroying the White Poop will spawn friendly white Dips which give off a small version of the aura.
  • (in Repentance and Repentance+)Collectible Everything Jar icon.pngEverything Jar: Using the first charge will always spawn a white poop.
    • Barring Everything Jar is only used at its first charge, when used along with items that grant active item charges, white poop can be spawned more than once in the same room, making this item much more powerful. If used with Collectible Habit icon.pngHabit, allows white poop to be spawned indefinitely rather than only on the first hit.
  • Collectible The Poop icon.pngThe Poop: Using The Poop will always spawn a white poop.
    • When used along with items that grant active item charges, white poop can be spawned more than once in the same room, making this item much more powerful. If used with Collectible Habit icon.pngHabit, allows white poop to be spawned indefinitely rather than only on the first hit.
  • (in Repentance and Repentance+)Collectible Rock Bottom icon.pngRock Bottom: Isaac will keep the stat upgrades even after leaving the aura. However, it won't keep the homing effect outside of the aura.

Interactions

  • Collectible BFFS! icon.pngBFFS!: Increases familiar's size but otherwise has no effect.
  • Collectible Box of Friends icon.pngBox of Friends: All poop familiars turn into white poop at the same time, and their affects are accumulative. A new poop familiar appears even if the previous poops have been used up.
  • Collectible D12 icon.pngD12: Does not increase the chance for rerolled obstacles to become White Poop.pngWhite Poop.
  • Collectible Holy Mantle icon.pngHoly Mantle / Character The Lost icon.pngThe Lost: Breaking the holy mantle shield does not count as damage taken, so the white poop will not drop.
  • (in Repentance and Repentance+)Collectible Immaculate Heart icon.pngImmaculate Heart: The damage multiplier does not stack with that from a white poop.
  • (in Repentance and Repentance+)Collectible Star of Bethlehem icon.pngStar of Bethlehem: The star's aura does not stack with the poop's aura.
  • Collectible Mom's Eye icon.pngMom's Eye / Collectible Loki's Horns icon.pngLoki's Horns: Not recommended. Backwards/cross shots from these items make it very easy to destroy the white poop by accident.
  • MeconiumMeconium: Although Meconium cannot replace the poop Collectible Hallowed Ground icon.pngHallowed Ground spawns with, Black Poop.pngBlack Poop has a chance to replace White Poop.pngWhite Poops that would have been created by other items which have synergies with Collectible Hallowed Ground icon.pngHallowed Ground.

Trivia

  • This item is likely a pun on the phrase "holy shit" or "holy crap".
  • "Hallowed Ground" was also the name of the DownpourDownpour OST back in Antibirth.
  • Hallowed ground is another way of calling The Holy Land.
    • As such, people thought the soil from Jerusalem and Bethlehem to be holy and brought them to sanctify the land by sprinkling it, like the famous cemetery Sedlec Ossuary, which explains why it's unlocked by Character The Forgotten icon.pngThe Forgotten.
