This article is about the boss. For the game mode, see Greed Mode.

Greed is a mini-boss and one of the Seven Deadly Sins. He can appear in ShopShops starting on the second floor of Chapter 2 or Secret RoomSecret Rooms starting on the first floor of Chapter 3.

  • (except in Rebirth) He also has a small chance to spawn when destroying a Special Shopkeeper.pngSpecial ShopkeeperError: The given entity ("special shopkeeper") does not exist. .

Behavior

Greed wanders randomly around the room and performs one of two attacks:

  • Fires a spread of 3 projectiles in the cardinal direction closest to Isaac.
  • Spawns 2 Hopper.pngHoppers to his either side.

If hit by Greed, Isaac loses 2-4 coins and drops 1-3 Pennies on the floor.

Greed deals a whole heart of contact damage.

Notes

  • Shops and Secret Rooms Greed is encountered in count as Mini-Boss RoomMini-Boss Rooms, and cannot be bombed out of. They also prevent any other Mini-Boss Rooms from generating that floor.
  • Once Greed is encountered in a Shop or Secret Room, Super Greed.pngSuper Greed replaces him in subsequent Shops and Secret Rooms. After Super Greed is encountered in the same manner, they cannot spawn in Shops or Secret Rooms for the rest of the run.
  • Defeating Greed in a Secret Room causes all entrances to adjacent room entrances to be opened. (except in Repentance+) The exceptions are entrances to adjacent Challenge RoomChallenge Rooms and Boss Challenge RoomBoss Challenge Rooms- which will be barred and blocked off forever, unable to be opened by a bomb.
  • If Isaac teleports out of the room after defeating Greed but without killing all the Hoppers he spawns, Isaac can re-fight Greed for extra coins or copies of Steam Sale.
  • (except in Repentance and Repentance+) Greed can drop Steam SaleSteam Sale even if Isaac has already encountered/possessed it.
  • (except in Rebirth) Greed spawned by blowing up a special shopkeeper can never spawn as Super Greed, even if another Greed was encountered before.
  • (in Repentance and Repentance+) The exact spawn chances for Greed/Super Greed are as follows:
    • Base chance 33.3%
    • Having more than 20 coins entering the floor: +1.66%
    • Destroyed the Donation Machine.pngDonation Machine on the previous floor: +3.33%
    • Destroyed a Shopkeeper.pngShopkeeper in the previous floor: +0.66%
    • Donated money to the Donation Machine.pngDonation Machine in the previous floor: -1.66% per coin, up to a maximum of -8.33% for 5 coins
    • These put the minimum and maximum chances at 25% and 39% respectively.

Trivia

  • Greed has his own account on Twitter. This was uncovered after the community dug up a figurine of Greed covered in Sharpie marks during an ARG, which quickly led to his account. After guessing his password, and tweeting on it, the password was quickly changed and was then used to announce the arrival of (except in Rebirth) Character Keeper icon.pngKeeper.
  • The Seven Deadly Sins that these mini-bosses are based upon are, in Christian teachings, a classification of vices from which all others are derived.
  • Greed is a personification of one of the Seven Deadly Sins, with Greed being described as an inordinate desire to possess something, whether that be wealth, power, etc. Greed is a desire to possess something even if it means doing something immoral. Greed can lead to sins such as deception, violence, hardheartedness, and ingratitude.
