Card Reading is a passive item added in The Binding of Isaac: Repentance.

Effects

• At the beginning of each floor, spawns 2 portals that each lead to either the Boss Room, Treasure Room, or Secret Room.
  • The Boss Room portal is red, the Treasure Room portal is yellow, and the Secret Room portal is blue.
  • On floors with no treasure rooms or no secret rooms, only 1 portal will spawn.
• The portals will disappear once the starting room is left, whether a portal was taken or not.

Notes

• Assuming that each portal has an equal chance of spawning, before chapter 4, each portal has a 2/3 chance of a portal of a specific color to appear. From chapter 4 onward, there's a 1/2 chance of either color spawning.
  • In challenges without treasure rooms or without secret rooms, only 1 portal will spawn on each floor.
• No portals will spawn in Home.
• During the Ascent, the portal will spawn in the "starting room" that leads to the next floor.
• Entering the starting room in the Mirrored World will cause the portals to spawn there, leading to the mirror's treasure, secret, or boss room.
• If the run is exited, the portals will not be there upon continuing.
• In The Void the boss portal will lead to a random boss, not necessarily Delirium.
• Entering a portal with Curse of the Maze active on the current floor has a chance of teleporting Isaac to a random room instead.
• The Treasure Room portal will not lead to a Planetarium if available, unlike XVII - The Stars.

Interactions

• Bloody Crown: Makes a second portal spawn in Chapter 4.
• Holy Crown/Wicked Crown: Makes a second portal spawn in Chapter 5, if on the respective floor.

Trivia

• Fittingly, this item's sprite is a combination of IV - The Emperor and XVII - The Stars.
• This item may be a reference to the portals in the videogame Wizard of Legend, where four portals appear after clearing the boss room, that teleport you to important locations (shops or the start point) depending on their color (red, green, purple, and turquoise).
• The subtext "A link to your future" is very likely a reference to the game The Legend of Zelda: A Link to The Past.
• Card Reading is twice as unlikely to appear as most other Shop items, and is the only Shop item which acts this way that cannot be obtained from a different item pool.

Bugs

Bug!	In the first floor of a Victory Lap, the portals will appear but cannot be entered. It will work again from floor 2.

Bug!	Entering one of the portals causes the Found Soul familiar to become invisible until Isaac drops and picks up the trinket again or enters a new floor.

Bug!	Using a portal, then rewinding time with the Glowing Hourglass will not cause the portals to reappear.

Bug!	Portals may on rare occasion appear in Death Certificate rooms, even under item pedestals. Taking the portal will simply teleport Isaac to another room inside the Death Certificate area.
