(except in Rebirth)

Betrayal is an unlockable passive item added in The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth.

Effect

  • (except in Repentance and Repentance+) Upon taking damage, all enemies in the room are charmed.
    • (except in Rebirth and Afterbirth) It won't trigger if there are less than 2 enemies in the room.
  • (in Repentance and Repentance+) Enemies are able to damage each other with projectiles. If an enemy is damaged by another enemy, they will attack that enemy instead of Isaac.

Notes

  • (except in Repentance and Repentance+) This item is extremely strong against the second and third phase of Boss ??? ingame.png???, as its own eternal flies become charmed and deal massive damage to the boss, often killing it after even just two uses.
  • (in Repentance and Repentance+) The initial effect only affects projectiles. Enemies will not deal contact damage to each other, unless hit by a projectile, at which point they will deal contact damage to their attacker.
  • (in Repentance and Repentance+) Charmed and friendly enemies can trigger the item.

Trivia

  • This is a reference to Judas betraying Jesus after the Last Supper, leading to Jesus' death by crucifixion.
  • (in Repentance and Repentance+) Betrayal's updated behavior bears a similarity to the monster infighting mechanic from the Doom series, Heretic, and Hexen, which similarly causes enemies struck by another enemy's attack to prioritize attacking that monster over the player character.
